Welcome the New Year at BAR with the Collaborative, Rara Avis!

In September, members came to the first meeting of the new year ready to present and exchange their contribution to the BAR collaborative.  This years theme was Rara Avis.  Co-chair Elisa Kessler Caporale, explains it very well:  "Literally "rare bird," this Latin expression indicates a rare or unique person or thing.  This theme asks you to choose an existing bird, or create/design your own (species of) bird and its environment."

Participants were instructed on size (1 folio, 7" x 11", grain short; when folded 7" x 5.5"), and selection of paper (BFK Rives, Stonehenge, or Canson Editions, white).

So, from the members and the fabulous pieces we exchanged....(drum roll please!)...here you go!!

Beryl Taylor Speaks at BAR Meeting

Beryl Taylor with some of her works.
On Thursday, June 26, Beryl spoke at the BAR meeting.  In Karen McDermott's words, "It was an evening filled with stimulation, visions of beauty and techniques."  Everything those of us in attendance could want!  (And those of us not in attendance were very sorry we missed!)

Again from Karen, "Beryl shared her work with us, literally by letting us pass it around, turn the pages and ask questions.  She was very giving with her techniques and creative philosophy and just a real pleasure to listen to."

Members enjoying Beryl's works.

Flat-Back Book with Barbara Mauriello

On Saturday, March 29, Barbara Mauriello led a one day workshop on making a flat-back book, with covered boards.  We fourteen BAR members worked very hard that day.  But, Barbara was a warm and knowledgeable teacher, and so we all went home with quite an impressive book!

Cutting bookcloth and bookboard the easy way!
Piercing a signature
Marking the hinge cloth
All the goodies!
Casing-in the book
Close to finished...

Thank you Barbara for a great workshop!
